HERE's gallery spaces will host an exhibition of paintings by young Austrian visual artist Walter Steinacher, curated by Ivan Talijancic (WaxFactory, New York.) This event is a collaboration with the New York based multidisciplinary performance group, WaxFactory and the Austrian Cultural Forum, New York and is presented as part of Performing Revolution in Central and Eastern Europe, a festival coordinated by the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts, Lincoln Center.

 

Walter Steinacher's images showcased in this exhibition capture the post-Communist nostalgia Steinacher observed during his long-term residency in Slovenia. Most of the paintings on view are part of a series that humorously addresses the image of Josip Broz Tito, the equally charismatic and controversial Yugoslav president whose death in the mid-1980s triggered the domino effect that led to the dissolution of Yugoslavia and the end of socialism in the Balkan region.

 

Curated by Ivan Talijancic (WaxFactory), this exhibition is presented by the Austrian Cultural Forum, HERE and WaxFactory.

The opening reception will take place from 6 to 8pm on March 3, 2010, with the gracious support of the Austrian Cultural Forum and the Consulate General of Slovenia, New York.

 

The exhibition will be accompanied with Yugostalgia-inspired video animation designed by the Slovenia multimedia artist Elena Fajt, which will be displayed on plasma monitors throughout HERE.

Veronica Mars meets Evil Dead in Vampire Cowboys newest creation for the stage, ALICE IN SLASHERLAND! When young Lewis Diaz accidentally resurrects the soul of a brutally slain girl named Alice, he unwittingly unleashes a literal hell on Earth. Now with every sort of demon, monster, and killer ravaging his small town, Lewis and Alice must find a way to close the rift before the big bad evil devil himself shows up and totally ruins their senior prom. Mixing slasher with Sam Raimi in Vampire Cowboys' signature aesthetic, this show will be one bloody good time!

LUSH VALLEY is a live art performance being developed by Yana Landowne, Kristin Marting, and Tal Yarden that chases the elusive idea of the American Dream, an idea born with our founding that remains our central driving myth. Why does belief in the "Dream" leave us with both shattered illusions & continued hope? LUSH VALLEY uses dance, music, text, & video  to explore how the Dream shapes our imaginations.  This project digs into the current mutation of The American Dream in order to take the pulse of our modern world as we transition into a new democracy. Although LUSH VALLEY is complex and experimental, we trust that the combination of meaningful dialogue between artists and community members and integration of text, video and dance will create a thought-provoking and immediate journey for our audiences. To create it, we will bring together artists & community members. A Live Arts Exchange. Louisville, Kentucky, Manhattan, New York. Motherlodges are unique programs that provide creative cross-pollination between artistic disciplines and across geographic boundaries. Motherlodges provide fertile space for its participants to develop new ideas, offering a mix of traditional and experimental live production with online programming, and a participatory and socially engaged applications of the arts.

Pericles: Prince of Tires is a comic rock mob musical based on William Shakespeare's Pericles, Prince of Tyre. This telling of Pericles has been shifted in time and space to modern era United States. Perry, "Prince of Tires", gets caught up in a web of intrigue, incest and the mafia as he tries to balance having a family while also running a "family." His sometimes hilarious and sometimes poignant exploits take him through New Jersey, New York and Massachusetts, while he dodges mob hits, lecherous carnies, multiple storms at sea, and losing his wife and daughter. As his epic journey ends, he learns that saving both his biological family and his mafia family are rooted in truly understanding the value of loyalty, honor and love.

Even before locavores roamed the earth, "back to the land" was hardly as simple as its promise; livestock and humans aren't known for behaving as expected.  And so it is in MILK, an elegant parable of change set on the cusp of a shifting American landscape.

Paris Syndrome is a dance theatre piece that draws from a Japanese phenomenon that occurs when tourists visit Paris and experience a psychological meltdown due to the realization that Paris, the "City of Love," does not match their idealized expectations of beauty. The only permanent cure is to go back to Japan – and never return to Paris. Through language games, spoken scenes, dance, and video interviews, Ex.Pgirl will explore the themes of madness, ideals, love, beauty, and cultural misunderstanding that Paris Syndrome seems to address, using the cultural backgrounds of the cast members (including Japanese, French, American, Argentinean, and Puerto Rican). Paris Syndrome is a humorous investigation of the parallels between culture shock, love, and disappointment.
